I think it looks really good for an American Wigeon. In the larger view of the photo, you can see the white crown stripe on the front of the head. The strong white belly band contrasting with the dark breast is also consistent with a wigeon.
I´m no expert, too. But all coulorful IDs don´t make sense, for the picture shows a mostly black-white bird.
Thanks Hansnew. If anyone has a definitive ID let me know. I'm no bird expert. :P
I don´t think, it´s a mallard, for they are not that white. Should be more gray and brown. The hole bird looks more black-white than colourd like a mallard. Great shot.
I think its either a ring necked duck or the mentioned, tufted duck. They both look pretty similar.
