Field Notes

Description:

Commonly known as the red spotted newt.

Habitat:

I found this little guy by a creek in the mountains. They usually hide under stones or wet, dead leaves.

Notes:

Fairly easy to catch. Skin is not moist to the touch. This is the type of salamander/newt that I found most often. Unfortunately, some of the newts I found looked like they were missing a limb of some sort, usually a foot. It seemed that they had been born that way. Possibly because of the environment...

These things are so neat to find while walking in the woods. It's probably from accidentally stepping on the log that they're hiding under that they loose limbs and parts. Gotta watch out where we're walking! The alternative of course would be from pollution; amphibians are very susceptible to pollution and birth defects are common where levels are too high.
This is the same type I have seen in Nova Scotia. Check out my sittings. Very interesting considering the distance!
