Field Notes

Description:

Dark green armored insect. Flat body with three distinct parts, the largest of which looked like a grenade. Six flat, three-segment legs, perpendicular to the body. The left rear leg was missing. Two long, red tipped antennae. Waved them at me like they would sting. Two complex eyes, on either side of the head. Insect was the size of the top of a broom handle. Moved slowly and deliberately.

Habitat:

Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Seen in summer - hot and very humid. 90 degrees when seen. In a suburban backyard with a swimming pool.
