Field Notes

Description:

Orchid Family (Orchidaceae) "Lady's Slipper" is one variety of rare, endangered and increasingly threatened orchids that not only has an unusual name but also has an unusual flower. The shape of the Lady's Slipper flower is that of its name, a lady's slipper.

Habitat:

Dry or moist woods, usually under Oak or Pine trees.

Notes:

I discovered my first lady's slipper growing in the wild in Quinan, Nova Scotia at our family cottage, on our wooded lot among the towering forest of hundred year old trees. I was awed to realize that this is a wild orchid. When you find this orchid, do not disturb it, as it will not survive transplant. This beautiful wild orchid is disappearing in the wild partly due to misguided attempts to transplant it, also due to habitat loss and intrusion by people who want to view these beautiful flowers.

When my daughter was growing up in South Jersey near the Pine Barrens, she found a pink Lady's orchid and transplanted it to our yard. We warned her it might not make the move all right, but she did it and it survived.
