the reptile list at Santa Ana NWR has the rosebelly lizard, but it also has the southern prairie lizard...

No worries! I'm willing to bet it is just a dark rosebelly lizard (S. variabilis). They are extremely common in the valley and you can see the faint dorsolateral stripes even on the very dark body.

uh oh! let me take a second look and see if i can find it.

This is a spiny lizard in the genus Sceloporus, hard to tell which one from the photo though since it is so dark. Not an anole though!
