Field Notes

Description:

An introduced species of moth to help control ragwort. I found hundreds in an overgrown field. The larvae of the species do a great job of eating ragwort. Once the food supplies begin to dwindle the caterpillars often turn cannibalistic.

Habitat:

Spotted devouring tansy ragwort plants in an overgrown farm meadow.

Notes:

The main reason for its introduction is to control tansy ragwort, which is toxic to livestock.

Cool spotting, Brian. Interesting about the cannibalism. I wish cane toads would resort to the same!
