Field Notes

Description:

Black wasp with segmented antennae and clear brown wings. It was very docile and relaxed it seemed, and didn't move too much. Apparently this is an odd one and by the looks of it not very common as there are few photos from this subfamily on the guide. Comments from experts about the insect on bugguide here: https://bugguide.net/node/view/1778142

Habitat:

On the leaf of a vine growing up a fence in a pasture. This neighborhood has a lot of pasture, with many pine and oak trees and not many plants in the understory.

Notes:

Subfamily Pristocerinae

Species ID Suggestions

Dolerus nitens

Thanks Arne. The link in my description shows the discussion for the ID on bugguide. They ruled out sawfly based on a few anatomical features and placed it in subfamily Pristocerinae
