Field Notes

Description:

Beautiful orange-capped mushrooms with a deep pinkish-red centres. Caps were about 40 mm wide and slightly rubbery to touch. Gills were white and the stipe, velvety and orange for the most part except the base which was a dark brown similar to the cap centre.
Several other fruiting bodies were emerging around the mature mushroom.

Habitat:

Spotted growing on a tree stump in a reserve with native and exotic trees.

Notes:

The cultivated form of this wild species, seen in super markets, is the enoki mushroom.
