Field Notes

Description:

Black and white penguins, the colouration is vital for camouflage - white for underwater predators looking upwards and black for predators looking down onto the water.

Habitat:

Sheltered cove.

Notes:

A wild breeding colony located in a protected area.

Previously known as Jackass Penguins because of their donkey-like braying call. They have since been renamed African Penguins since several South American species produce the same sound, but these are the only species that breeds in Africa.

@Marta - there are also artificial nests provided for the penguins - barrels half-buried in the sand. There is limited space on the beach and the population is successfully increasing.
@Jennifer - you're welcome :)
I remember seeing these in a documentary and how they even nest under peoples houses there :-)
