The Chinese mantis can grow to 4 inches and is the largest mantis in North America. It's not native to the US, but is used for biological control. The jury's still out on its effectiveness, since it eats beneficial insects, as well as pest insects. It's probably not one of the other mantids---too big to be a Carolina mantis, and the green stripe on its back is an identifier for the Chinese mantis.
