Field Notes

Description:

Small moth (2 cm) in length. All black besides the red/orange collar. This one appears to be a male. Found feeding on milkweed during the day.

Habitat:

Just on the edge of a forest, next to large prairie ridges.

Notes:

Caterpillars of this moth feed together. Coloring reminds me of a monarch caterpillar or a black swallowtail caterpillar depending on the instar.
