Field Notes

Description:

Small hawk, 9.5 - 14.5" (females are larger, I believe I've been mostly seeing a female) black on top with barred tail, white underbelly, dark red eyes, faint ochre broken striations on chest.

Habitat:

Common in the Americas, and more common since DDT and other pesticides were banned in the 60s & 70d, and also because more people put out bird feeders, which is where this one has been hanging around. Hoping the bird feeder will help offset them carrying off the occasional bird at the feeder.

Notes:

It's suggested that a feeder be moved around to discouraged hawks and rodents from setting up near it permanently. If hawks become too much of a problem it may be necessary to stop feeding for a few weeks to get them to move to other territory.
