Hmm..I see your point Lori. I looked up some pictures of the question mark butterfly, but the wing shape on this one isn't distinctive enough. The question mark has some pretty sharp points. http://bugguide.net/node/view/487 I think I agree with you on the summer form. The two spots at the top of the wing with the small vertical band, then three spots in a line underneath that seem to be the same across the comma, and the wing shape is a lot closer.
Latimeria, compare this spotting to the Summer form of the Eastern Comma on this page: http://www.cirrusimage.com/butterfly_ecomma.htm, and tell me what you think.
It might be the question mark butterfly. I checked my pictures of the comma, but the wing shape and spots are different.
Strikes me a type of "Comma" butterfly, or at least one of the Polygonia species, but I'm not sure which one.
