Sharp-shinned hawk
Accipiter striatus
40.9979, -72.2926
Field Notes
Description:
Small hawk that's been hanging around our bird feeder. This this is a female, because it's a little on the larger size of their size (9.5-14.5"). Really beautiful although I don't the other birds harmed. Beautiful white belly with ochre broken striations, banded tail as you can see in 2nd photo.
Habitat:
All over the Americas, apparently, and numbers are increasing since use of DDT was curtailed, and also use of bird feeders has gone up!
