Field Notes

Description:

Small hawk that's been hanging around our bird feeder. This this is a female, because it's a little on the larger size of their size (9.5-14.5"). Really beautiful although I don't the other birds harmed. Beautiful white belly with ochre broken striations, banded tail as you can see in 2nd photo.

Habitat:

All over the Americas, apparently, and numbers are increasing since use of DDT was curtailed, and also use of bird feeders has gone up!

I've never seen one before in New York but they are a nice looking bird!
Well I love the project! and will continue to participate.
Apologies for the inconvenience, April. We're still working out some kinks in the system. Thanks for letting us know about the issue, we'll look into it. And thanks again for updating your spotting.
Re-added the comments, and this time they stuck.
OK, that's weird, because I put in ALL the information before I uploaded it. what's that about??
Hi April, thanks for your contribution. It looks like these wonderful bird spottings you've upload were not categorized correctly nor do we know where you saw them. It would be unfortunate for them to get lost in the shuffle. Please take a moment to "Edit your spotting" and select the appropriate category and add the correct location. If you need some help editing your spotting please let us know. Many thanks.
