Field Notes

Description:

Small, singular, "brain like" cap connected at stipe, white stipe, 2 inches in height.

Habitat:

Growing out of moss on a root of a large oak tree.

Notes:

Mid april this was spotted near the White river basin in Washington state.

Upon further research Trevor, I retract my original assumption. I now believe it to be a True Morel, due to the info provided in the following link. www.scribd.com/doc/2374544/true-false-morels The specimen I had stumbled upon clearly had an attached cap at the stipe, my mistake. Wish i would have known then, could have been a delightful while out on my hike.
Nice find! I'm curious, how can you tell false morels from real morels? I know the false kind are quite poisonous, while the real ones can be quite delicious, so what do you look for so that you don't accidentally eat the wrong one?
