Field Notes

Description:

Bengal Monitors are opportunists with a wide array of prey ranging from small terrestrial vertebrates, ground birds and eggs to fish and crabs. They take shelter in burrows they dig or crevices in rocks and trees. Spotted this young one occupying one of the burrows in a Blue-tailed Bee-eater nesting colony. It might have been scouring for eggs or young ones within these nests.

Habitat:

A sandy bank near a canal.
