Field Notes

Description:

Circular, almost like a poached egg. The peripheral part is striated.

Habitat:

We had stopped for lunch at a restaurant, enroute Galle from Mirissa, Sri Lanka. The restaurant had a beach attached. The tide was coming in. I ventured out for a very quick survey and took a few shoots. This is one invertebrate I saw along with some Chitons.

Notes:

This is my 2200th spotting and I chose an unknown animal as a mark of my deep appreciation of PN for helping me learn about so many hitherto unknown (to me) species. Here is another one. Please, can anyone help with ID.

@ Machi. Thank you...I think you nailed it. I have updated. Many, many thanks once again.
After looking at yours again I am fairly confident it is a limpet. In the zoomed out photos with the others it is even more apparent. Try looking into Lottia and Cellana (particularly Cellana radiata). Those are a couple that came up in my search for your area that look similar.
@ Machi...thanks, let's see what suggestions come up.
@maplemoth66. I share your curiosity too but I did not interfere... I had nothing with which to safely excavate this creature...I did not want to risk hurting it. I had no way of knowing if it could sting,or if it was poisonous...whatever....So, I took nothing but photographs and left nothing but footprints. Don't worry I have great faith in PN...someone will know. Definitely!
The closest thing I can think of is a limpet, but I've never seen one with a rounded top like that. I'm definitely interested in learning what this is too!
