Southern Bracket

Wood-rotting bracket polypore fungi. Two specimens found on the root of a dead Strangler Fig (Ficus watkinsiana). One of the brackets still attached to the root, whilst the other had dislodged and was laying amongst ferns and leaf litter. Each bracket approx. 20-25 cm wide. The bottom of the dislodged specimen was completely black and looked like charcoal, as if it had been burnt. However, no fires have been through this area. The second reference link shows the same fungi, and that's how I've identified this spotting. The synonym G. applanatum also has the common names Artist's Bracket, Artist's Conk, or Flacher Lackporling.
