Field Notes

Habitat:

Alpine Meadow

Notes:

A Mother moose keeps a watchful eye over her yearling son while they munch the morning away. I thought it was very interesting that she still had her yearling son with her and not a brand new calf. She looks very healthy but either didn't mate or had a failed pregnancy over the winter. Although I guess a younger calf could have been hiding in the willows somewhere, but that is unlikely. You could tell that Mother and son were still very bonded.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on why she might still have an older calf with her? Perhaps this is normal?
