Field Notes

Description:

This is a male ruby-crowned kinglet who was showing off his crown on a day of wet snow. He was upset, which is when they display their crowns (the red feathers atop the head otherwise stay hidden by the other head feathers) - apparently both by a female kinglet who was visiting the suet feeder and by the weather.

Habitat:

Yard in a small town with many trees. He will soon be migrating north for breeding purposes.
