Snowberry Clearwing
Hemaris diffinis
38.9525, -83.761
Field Notes
Description:
A bumblebee mimic. Banded black and pale yellow, some with greenish tinge. Wings are clear, with black bands. Legs are black.
Long proboscis for nectaring flowers.
Habitat:
A rural, gated, man-made lake community. I have let this main ditchline go without cutting for about 6 years. There are numerous native plant species, including the featured common milkweed (A. syriaca), as well as skullcap, willows, black cherry, jewelweed, goldenrod, and so much more.
Notes:
I once had a friend who thought they were a species mini hummingbirds, their wings flap so fast, and produce a similar sound if close.
