Field Notes

Description:

Smallest of the Woodpecker family at 6-7 inches long. Eastern males have red patch on the back of the head; females have a black patch.

Habitat:

Downy woodpeckers are commonly found throughout the United States and Canada, excluding the SouthWest (Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California). They can be found in wooded areas.

Notes:

They were playing for half an hour or so in our backyard. This type of woodpecker is always in the area but this is the first time I saw them interacting with each other. They didn't seem to fighting over territory, but rather, they acted very playful with each other.
