Field Notes

Description:

Soft pink feathers with a dull colored head. As the name implies, flat, spoon-shaped bill.

Habitat:

The bird was rooting around in the man-made pond of my neighborhood.

Notes:

How surprised were my daughter and I when we saw this awkward looking pink bird in our pond instead of our normal Great Egret? I dropped her off at school and ran home to grab my camera. Luckily, the bird was still searching for breakfast when I returned. I've seen this species closer to the coast, but never this far north.
