Field Notes

Description:

The Globe Orchid is a European terrestrial orchid which can be found at altitudes of up to 2600 m ASL. The flowers are purple to pink on a dense spherical spike, with a spur and a tri-lobed lip, and speckled. Flowers from May to August.

Habitat:

Calcarous patch of grass, alt. 2200 m above see level. Last picture shows the habitat.

Notes:

There are two known species in the genus Traunsteinera, native to Europe, Turkey and the Caucasus: Traunsteinera globosa - found from Spain east to Ukraine and Turkey, including France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, and
Traunsteinera sphaerica, found in Turkey and the Caucasus.
