Field Notes

Description:

orange mushroom with orange liquid exuding from the cut gills (or around the edge of the cut stem); the mushroom conspicuously bruising and aging greenish

Habitat:

on the ground under conifers, Telluride, Colorado

Notes:

this is NOT the same as Lactarius deliciosus as it is known in Europe, and it seems to be different from other populations in the US. It is a very good edible when slowly cooked.
