Field Notes

Description:

Araneidae; Neoscona sp. I was drawn between calling this spider Neoscona sp. or Neoscona crucifera. I would greatly have preferred the latter, but I just was not sure enough. However there are pictures just like mine on a number of photographic websites and it is tempting to take this easy route to a species level ID. The problem is that these pictures do not cite any scientific references.

Habitat:

This particular spider was spotted on a banana plant near the edge of a rice field, but I think I should mention that I have seen exactly the same type of spider many times in the rice crop, presumably attracted by the many insect pests which can be found there.
