Field Notes

Description:

Orange cap, yellowish white gills, ring on stem, stem often ornamented with chevrons to base, large egg-like cup about base when found growing (often removed for sale in markets, as here in Mexico)

Habitat:

on the ground in forested areas

Notes:

an edible mushroom but arguably not as good as the "true" Amanita caesarea from Europe
Danger: Some other species of Amanita are quite toxic. Not something for beginners to attempt to identify to eat!
