Field Notes

Description:

During a nature outing with other birders, we saw large flocks of various ducks. These Northern shovelers were among them; I find them quite distinctive with their large, unique bills, which have comb-like projections on the edges that help them filter seeds and little crustaceans from the wetlands where they feed.

Habitat:

North Atlantic coastal area

Notes:

The colorful shoveler is the male and the second photo shows his female companion with more subdued colors

I've never seen one of these amazing ducks before. The name is so appropriate. Wonderful spotting, Maria.
Don't know if I have a favorite duck but these are really cool to see!
