Field Notes

Description:

Medium-sized grasshoppers, green to grayish-brown in color, banded and striped as shown.

Habitat:

Degraded shortgrass prairie in mostly urban-industrial area of town.

Notes:

This species is incredibly abundant this year. It is named for Russian Thistle ("tumbleweed"), which is not a thistle at all, nor native to North America, but which the insect feeds on.
