Description:
Max. size about 1.5cm, extremely prolific (exponential population growth as long as there's a food supply).
Habitat:
Freshwater, abundant in ponds and slow moving streams throughout New England. Herbivorous,can damage aquatic plant life if population gets too large.
Notes:
Original population collected from pond in Donnelly Nature Preserve (South Windsor, CT). Now populating approximately 50 tanks in my classroom and my water garden at home. Students using them for experimenting with breeding, limiting factors, population sampling and aquatic toxicology. Population regularly culled and fed to Sheepshead minnows and Clown Loaches.
