Field Notes

Description:

Araneidae; Cyrtophora; Cyrtophora cicatrosa Stoliczka, 1869. The Dome Spider shown here came to my attention when I spotted a Jumping Spider on the periphery of its web, which appeared to have stolen a prey item from the dome - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/92243383... I know the Dome Spider and the style of its web because there is colony of C. cicatrosa on a palm tree in the front yard of our house. My spottings based on that colony are listed below in Notes. The spider shown here is also part of a colony. Its web joins to another in an adjacent pot plant which in turn, connects to the next web in another plant and so on. Although this is a very tiny spider, I find it very interesting. It appears, because of the inter-connecting webs, to live a social or partly-social lifestyle. I am not sure if any other spiders follow this trait.

Habitat:

This Dome Spider was spotted in the rice mill front yard. Its web was moored on the leaves of a Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata).
