Field Notes

Description:

This is a large diving waterbird, the largest of the grebes. It has a dark black cap that begins at the base of the bill and extends over the top of the head and down the long neck. The black cap includes the eyes, which differentiates it from Clark’s Grebe. The back and wings are a dark gray to black. The lower sides of the head and front of the neck are white down to and including the breast and underside. The bill is greenish and the eye is red.

Habitat:

This grebe was seen on a lake in San Diego in November (20 masl).

Notes:

I only got the one decent shot as it was at some distance, but a first for my list.

And I thought all Grebes looked like this. I was surprised to see many have shorter necks and look like ducks with pointed bills. Once again PN is forcing us to learn 😊 Thanks Neil.
Wow, nice spotting, Tukup. I didn't realise there was such a large grebe species. Aust. grebes are tiny by comparison. Cheers for sharing.
