Io Moth (Eggs and Larvae)
Automeris io
41.7786, -71.9251
Field Notes
Description:
Io moth eggs and first instar caterpillars. Eggs were found on a weeping cherry tree, and about thirty caterpillars hatched from them (only five did not). I was able to watch them emerge from their eggs, which was absolutely incredible. The young caterpillars ate their shells and began feeding on the cherry leaves, but suddenly stopped (even the strongest of them). I am not certain why, as I provided fresh leaves and monitored them closely. I am hoping that the five unhatched eggs will give me a second chance, but they could be duds.
Found: July 2, 2014
Hatched: July 20, 2014
Habitat:
Eggs found on a weeping cherry tree leaf.
Notes:
Notice the gregarious behavior of early io moth caterpillars in these photos. They would follow each other in a single file line along the host plant; it was quite cute.
Please let me know if you have any advice for raising first instar caterpillars. I successfully raised an American Lady from an egg, but for some reason was unsuccessful with these little ones. I am very disappointed and feel responsible.
