Field Notes

Description:

My brother went to Pennsylvania, to visit some of his relatives. During his visit, he would go exploring in the woods, each day, looking for Moth Cocoons, and Butterfly Pupae, to take back to Florida with him. This pupa, was one and one eighth of an inch long, and one fourth of an inch wide. The color of this pupa, was a dark, black color. One end of this pupa was pointed, and one end of this pupa, was rounded.

Habitat:

My brother found this pupa in the woods, in the state of Pennsylvania. Deciduous woodlands.

Notes:

Wingspan: 4.5 to 7.5 cm. Caterpillars make a squeaking sound, when disturbed. Caterpillar host plants. Walnut, and butternut. Adults, do not feed. Maine, south to Florida, west to North Dakota, and west Texas, and south to Nuevo León, Mexico.
