I didn't add any camera affects... he let me walk right up to him then flew away after I was only a foot away.

I agree the colors are dark but I do think it is still a gold finch. I have a ton of them in my backyard. They change colors throughout the year. This one might be in the process of changing.
I don't either! The strange tail coloration is really throwing me off... did it actually look purple-blue or is it a camera artifact? If it wasn't for that I'd be inclined to say American goldfinch, but it looks a little off even for that.
Come on you good birders, I really do not recognize this.
