This insect is often used as a pet in some parts of mexico, specially in Merida, Yucatan.

umm well, they don't hurt them, the people who sells them just glued them the jewels and the little chain.. usually the people who buy them take care of them... they buy the wood, and stuff.. and the bug is very safe, they only walk.. and walk.. haha :)
I feel kind of bad for the bug but it looks beautiful.
haha it's not a cockroach.. it's a Mexican insect called maquech. it's very popular at the south side of the country. the jewels are not expensive.. i think they're plastic most of the time. you can feed them with a kind of spongy wet wood.. they feed on the humid of the wood :)
