Description:
Kingfishers have keen awareness and don't like to photographed. Medium size birds whose plumage consist of a slate blue back, white collar and mostly white underneath. There are some small white specs on the top of the tail and a white spot near the eye. Their large head has a scruffy crown and they have a large, stout bill. The female features a rufous band across the upper belly that extends down the flanks.
Habitat:
Spotted at the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. He was in a dead shrubby tree, which had a perfect perch for him to look for fish at high tide. This wildlife refuge is incredible huge and has many kinds of habitats such as estuary, marsh, coastal marsh, wetland, riparian forest, swamp, pond, river, open sea, mud flats and probably more (with trail access to most of these).
Notes:
This bird's breeding habitat is near inland bodies of waters or coasts across most of Canada, Alaska and the United States. They migrate from the northern parts of its range to the southern United States, Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies in winter.
