Field Notes

Description:

Toad with distinctive ridges on its back and head. Rusty brown to yellowish-green and about 4 inches in length. Has a gold iris and a large parotoid gland lies behind each eye. Fingers are free of webbing. The somewhat smooth skin with a reddish wash indicates this is a juvenile. Skin is toxic.

Habitat:

Spotted at Falcon Lake State Park. The native range is from the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas to the central Amazon and southeastern Peru, and some of the continental islands near Venezuela (such as Trinidad and Tobago).

Notes:

Introduced to many regions in the world where it is considered a pest.
