Description:
Sphagnum group: sphagnum. Plant forming very tight, rising mounds. Capitiulum highly colored: red brown, chestnut. capitulum and spreading branches like swollen cigars, very packed, small slender thread-like pendant branches distinguished from spreading branches. Stem and branch cortical cells with spiral fibrils, porose. Branch leaf cross sections showing chlorophyllous cells exposed on the concave surface. small knobs, or comb-like features radiating perpendicularly out from the internal surfaces of the chlorophyllous cells.
Habitat:
Full exposure in a domed bog on the Olympic Peninsula. Associated species: Sphagnum rubellum and Sphagnum fuscum, crowberry and ledum.
