Field Notes

Description:

Large insect that looks like Darth Vader. Yellow wings trimmed in brown, with black marks.. This cicada was formerly known as Gaeana sulphurea. Called “butterfly cicadas” because of their colorful wings. Sulphur refers to the yellow colour.

Habitat:

Campus of the camp we stayed in Neora Valley, West Bengal. This is a hilly and forested area just opening up to tourism.. There was only ONE individual which is strange as cicadas generally emerge altogether in thousands and more. The cicada was sluggish, could barely move as it crawled on stalks on grass...its movement was very laboured...it was cold and clammy weather perhaps the cicada felt cold.
