Field Notes

Description:

California Fan Palm, sometimes called Petticoat Palm due to the appearance of dead leaves next to trunk.

Habitat:

Coastal Chapparal

Notes:

Located at Old Adobe at Santa Rosa Plateau. I laughed because all the woodpecker holes in the trunk are stuffed with acorns from the Live Oak behind, presumably by squirrels.
As far as I know, this is the only palm species native to California (low-desert canyons)
