Thank you for the ID suggestion! I thought it was rather striking when I found this twig with the flower still attached.
This is one of my favorite trees. There are only two like it in the world: the only other species in its genus is found in China and Vietnam. It's in the magnolia family, and its leaves are distinctive with their four deep lobes. It's truly a wonderful and beautiful tree. You're lucky to live within its range!
