Sphinx Moth
Manduca pellenia
16.7291, -92.624
Field Notes
Description:
Huge Sphinx Moth with a 16 cm wingspan! It was 4.5 cm long. The upper wings are dark and light browns, like bark, the underwings dark grey with white stripes. The upper abdomen has 2 rows of yellow spots, with smaller white spots on the sides of the abdomen. The bottom of the moth was all cream colored. Family Sphingidae.
Habitat:
Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
Notes:
Manduca pellenia and Manduca scutata are very similar. Both have ranges that include Mexico, although information for Mexico is sparse. To me, it looks most like M. pellenia.
