Field Notes

Description:

Reddish/brown bell, with long tentacles. In cold waters it can grow to 8' across with tentacles over 60' long! It is highly toxic causing serious burns and blisters, can even be fatal.

Ocean sunfish (Mola Molas) are one of its few predators (?)

Notes:

Lion's mane feed mostly on moon jelly fish and other small fish that get entangled in their tentacles.

Me too but for a different reason... definitely did not want to experience them!
Exceptional spotting! I'm mesmerized by its tentacles.
This one oozed over to my boat in summer of 2007... I wasn't altogether happy to see it. Didn't go swimming that day!
