Field Notes

Description:

I saw two of them flying together pretty low to the ground, then one landed on the fencepost. The one on the fencepost stayed perched for about half an hour before departing. We saw the one in the first photo later in the day by Kalsin Pond.

Habitat:

I saw them around a snow-covered pasture near the beach. One perched a long time on these fenceposts, as is characteristic of these birds. There used to be a restaurant there, but it has been closed for some time, so not too many people visit this spot anymore.

Notes:

Photo taken during the Narrow Cape - Kalsin Bay Christmas Bird Count. Listed as rare during winter on my Kodiak Fish & Wildlife Service bird list and uncommon the rest of the year. This was only my second time seeing this species, and the first time in Kodiak. I also saw one on my way home later in the day.
