My NZ book shows a Banded Rail, Rallus philippensis, and the picture looks almost identical, just the buff band is lighter, so just the first bit of each name missing. It would seem quite likely they are the same; perhaps some-one more familiar with the area can comment.
Do you know if they are in New Zealand also? gorgeous series.
