Field Notes

Habitat:

Spend all day in the sea but come ashore in the evening. Many sleep and breed in a special set-aside area by the coast but many others, like this one, roam through the town at night and sleep under buildings, bushes or where-ever else they can find. Many roads have signs warning drivers to watch out for, and give way to, Penguins! This one was behind our hotel.

The best bit is watching them trying to climb over the rocks to get up into town, some 10 to 15 feet higher and the are only a little over a foot tall when fully grown. The rocks are quite slippery. You can see them in the sea before it gets dark but they wait until the light is almost gone before jumping up onto the rocks, and often falling off. Then they suddenly seem to be all around for a few minutes before disappearing.
It must be so funny seeing them walking around! I guess it's normal for the people who live in the area
