Field Notes

Description:

This is the blue jeans morph, so named due to the blue coloration on its legs. Black specks are interspersed with the blue, and its body is orange-red with black spots. The frog is quite tiny, only about an inch long (if that).

Habitat:

Tropical rain forest, at La Selva Biological Station.

Notes:

The strawberry poison-dart frog is the most toxic member of its genus, but not the most poisonous of the poison dart frogs. Even so, you're advised not to lick it.

Still commonly found as Dendrobates(family) pumilio. It's supposedly the most toxic of it genus (Oophaga). I was obsessed with Dendrobatids when I was younger, but never got to see them in the wild! Great photos of a beautiful specimen.

It looks like the one shown to us while we were in Costa Rica. Don't handle them if you have an open cut on your hand.
