Description:
Adult eagles have dark brown bodies, white heads, yellow legs beak and eyes. First year chicks are totally dark brown (including eyes), each year becoming more mottled until they have full adult plummage at around 5 years. Their wingspan is 7'. The female is a bit larger and bulkier than the male.
Habitat:
Coastal bays, estuaries, rivers and lakes.
Notes:
I observe harbor seals from a small rocky island. On occasion one of the adults eagles, taking a break from nesting duties, will land on a tree close behind me. Since I am so still it settles in and often we spend a companionable few minutes before it has to go back to "work".
