Field Notes

Description:

This white casing is about 2cm x 1cm with a definite thickening around the edge.

Habitat:

Discovered in Lane Pool Conservation Reserve Dwellingup/Nanga

Notes:

When we first saw it we thought it may be a bird's egg but the casing wasn't brittle. Second thoughts were that it might be a reptile egg but the thickened "skin" that ran the circumference of the casing was unlike any reptile egg I've seen. Tufts of ? and tiny flecks of pale brown matter (possibly seed husk) could be tapped out of the casing.

It has been photographed on a 77mm diameter camera lens cap to give an indication of size and shape.

Perth Museum advises: probably the egg casing of a large spider. .. the leathery case and inclusions are not unusual in an egg where the young have morphed and departed.

Perth Museum suggested it was a spider casing as well although they didn't specify which species of spider. Interesting that 2 casings were found within 50m or so of each other. If I find another one I will photograph more closely.
